Generations of Success
The Value of Family
Family is at the heart of everything we do. We take great pride in being a family-owned and operated company and honour the pioneers in our family who laid the foundation for our growth. With five members of the third generation now leading the way, we are excited for what the future holds and remain committed to stewarding the business and the land for generations to come.
Together, Simpson Seeds Inc. and Simpson Farms form a partnership that connects us directly with local producers for pedigree seed and enables the export of commercial grain to markets worldwide. Working with a family business means you’re partnering with a team dedicated to quality, sustainability, and building lasting relationships.

1965
Where our story begins
The farming roots of James (Jim) Simpson and Helen Simpson are the foundation of the company now known as Simpson Seeds Inc.
Jim and Helen had a family of four children – three of whom were boys, Tom, Greg and John Simpson. In the fall of 1965 the Simpson family moved from their farm located West of Moose Jaw, to one located two miles south of the #1 highway, southeast of Moose Jaw. This location would later become the birthplace of Simpson Seeds Inc.
1977
Building the dream
In the late 70’s the idea of building a seed cleaning facility began to float around the Simpson Family dinner table. The influence for this idea was sourced from Greg’s employment with Agriculture Canada, and his experience in administering the Canadian Seeds Act and regulation of seed cleaning and processing plants.
In 1977, John, Greg and Tom became certified seed growers, and shortly thereafter, the building of the plant operation commenced while Greg was still employed with Agriculture Canada. Through an interesting twist of destiny, a call regarding a distressed car of Barley allowed Greg to gain a contact in Winnipeg that was offering contracts for commercial processing of lentils.
1979
A business is born
August 13, 1979 Simpson Seeds Inc. (“SSI”) was born. At this time Jim was president and each of the three sons were vice presidents of the company.
By 1980 pedigree seed cleaning activity commenced; in their first year of processing, John, Greg and Tom cleaned their first million pounds of lentils.
In 1992, Simpson Seeds Inc. continued to grow by purchasing land and buildings, eventually constructing a second seed cleaning plant on the north end of Moose Jaw, conveniently located near a railway line.

Third Generation Joins Forces to Build the Future
Throughout the 2000s, various members of the third generation (G3) became involved in the family business, bringing their education and experience from diverse industries.
On July 30, 2008, Westgate Mills Inc. was established by G3 under the guidance of Tom, Greg and John, the second generation (G2), and proved to be successful in adding value to both the business and customers.
With the integration of G3, succession planning began to take shape, laying the groundwork for transferring the business across future generations.

The Next Generation Takes The Helm
2021 marked the beginning of a new chapter as G2 retired and G3 took the helm. With the new generation of ownership, Simpson Seeds Inc. has continued to grow and adapt to the evolving landscape of our industry.
The G3 family remains actively involved in both management and governance of the company.

Embracing Innovation: The Future of Pulse Flour Milling
As G3 looks to the future, the desire to innovate and diversify its market has become a central focus.
Market demand is driving interest in innovative products featuring pulse flour, and the Simpsons are ready to meet this challenge.
To the future and beyond!
